Operational excellence in order to meet the quality expectations of all clients whilst reaching the shareholders’ financial targets. The management of every terminal aims at reaching this objective and regularly defines individual projects and investments in order to further develop the facility and to deal with urgent problems.

Quick check-up

External factors affecting terminal operation as well as future challenges are hardly predictable and can only be influenced slightly. Against this background, the question arises: How fit is my terminal? And will my company be able to operate just as well considering expected or unexpected future developments? To find out, we offer a quick check-up as part of our operational excellence programme. The quick check-up is to be understood as a check-up for your terminal, during which our experts first visit the terminal and perform a wide analysis of the KPIs. Based on the results of the analysis, we focus on selected areas or processes in the system and, if necessary, perform interviews with those involved in the process. The result of the quick check-up is the identification of improvement potential for the fitness of your terminal. We help to improve the fitness of your terminal and to achieve and/or maintain operational excellence. After the quick check-up, we analyse the material and information flows together with the customer team in order to detect wastage and its causes.  Based on this, we develop necessary measures for improvement. The proposed improvement measures result in short-term and long-term projects in various areas of the terminal in order to eliminate the identified weak points. Often, the performance can already be increased with small adjustments at low investment costs.

Operational processes and maintenance

Identifying and eliminating the bottlenecks in your material flow can significantly increase total performance. The aim is to achieve operational excellence with intelligent processes and efficient organisation. HPMport help you to identify the potentials and to define and implement the right measures. Even small changes may have a considerable effect on the operation. To support our customers in achieving operational excellence in operation and workshops, we apply the appropriate best practices from the port industry and other sectors. We draw on years of experience in logistics projects in areas beyond container handling. With its broad knowledge of the industry, our sister company HPMlog executes projects with a high proportion of logistics in many sectors, for example in the areas of spare parts logistics, the automotive industry, pharmaceuticals, retail or food production. We focus on lean, stable and standardised processes, as well as their implementation and acceptance by employees. It is important for us that employees are convinced of the processes, which is why we follow the “bottom-up” principle and optimise the processes together with your team.

Layout and use of space

For a more efficient use of space, ergonomic workplaces and improvement of transport efficiency, which are also goals in the framework of operational excellence, changes in the layout may be required too. Before the decision concerning implementation is made, we look more closely at the effects of the changes on operations and terminal performance.  For extensive measures, we can prove the positive effect of the changes based on 3D modelling and simulation before implementation.

TOS optimisation

The efficient operation of medium and large container terminals is hardly imaginable without the use of a terminal operating system. Again, there may be untapped potential for increasing the efficiency of your operation without investing in new systems. The more intensive use or adaption of available functions through configuration can already lead to better performance. Training courses for users make the operation of your systems more effective and more uniform, thus improving performance and service quality. However, a specific functional extension can be useful if future demands indicate an extended system support, such as the introduction of gate automation or load control by truck booking systems.

Training support & coaching

During the implementation of the improvement measures, a continuous learning process takes place. Together with the terminal staff we solve the tasks according to the plan-do-check-act cycle and promote the systematic approach. Furthermore, we support the team when choosing and applying suitable methods for successful problem solving. Our goal is for your terminal to become a self-learning organisation and for operational excellence to become part of your everyday life.
